Precedent Analysis

James Addison

Precedent analysis

Prompt

Our focus will be on developing wearable technologies that enhance health. To effectively address this challenge and spark initial ideas, we will begin by conducting precedent research. Precedent research involves exploring existing projects, works, ideas, and concepts that showcase innovative approaches and solutions. By examining these precedents, we can uncover new insights and inspirations that are relevant to our studio’s context, providing a solid foundation for our design process.

Instructions:

  1. Before you start this activity, do some informal research and learn about physical health issues. WebMD (www.webmd.com) , Mayo Clinic (www.mayoclinic.org) , Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (www.cdc.gov) , National Institutes of Health (NIH) (www.nih.gov) , Healthline (www.healthline.com), and PubMed (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
  2. With your teacher, explore the Physical Health Precedents Library.
  3. Choose 2 precedent projects and answer the guiding questions (feel free to combine questions to craft a more coherent response)
    • What is the overall idea of this project?
    • What problem is this project trying to solve, if any?
    • What is the experience for a user to interact with this design?
    • Explain one key element or detail, and how the detail reinforces the overall idea of the project.

 3. Sketch! Draw a sketch of someone wearing or interacting with the project. Draw a thought bubble or write a sentence on the sketch that states what the person is thinking while engaging with the project (1 sketch for each of the projects you researched).

Deliverables:

Create a post in the 'Responses tab' above, and for each project that you select, answer the guiding questions (above) and add your sketches resulting from the Drawing Response.

Materials:

Laptop, notebooks, pens, and colored markers
