PRECEDENT

RESEARCH

Prompt

In this precedent research activity, we will investigate innovative furniture designs that demonstrate creative play experiences, sustainable strategies, and unique assembly techniques. These example of the interest to learn about and present to the rest of the studio.

Instructions

Working in groups of 2, you will choose 1 precedent from each of the 3 categories (Play Furniture, Sustainable Furniture, & RTA Furniture) from the Precedent Library found in the studio Toolbox. Then, for each of the precedents you choose, create a brief slideshow noting the following information with images:

  1. Title of project & name of designer/artist
  2. Why did you choose to look into this particular precedent? What aspects do you find compelling about the design? List the most important features of the design.
  3. What materials and fabrication methods were used to create this furniture?
  4. Create a hand-drawn sketch of either a critical detail/connection OR a hand-drawn diagram showing how the user interacts/plays with this piece of furniture.
  5. Are there elements of this precedent that might inspire your own potential project idea and approach?
  6. Present your findings to the studio, so we can all form a shared library of existing projects to reference.

Deliverables

In the Response tab within this activity, submit your responses to the questions above in the form of a short slideshow (one for each precedent your research).
