Health Issue

Research

Prompt

Designers rely heavily on research to help inform specific choices throughout the design process that help ensure their end product is successful at achieving its intended goal. Research helps provide clear insight into problems and reduces assumptions.  Before we move into the prototyping stage, you will research the health issues that you are trying to assist with your health wearable devices.

Instructions

1. Using reliable resources, you will learn more about the health topics you are trying to assist with your health wearable device project. You may use resources from the library or the internet to inform your research process. There are websites at your fingertips, however many of them are not reliable sources of information. You'll have to think critically about the sites you visit and whether they seem trustworthy.

We suggest using one of the following online resources (listed below) or a reputable news organization (i.e., New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, etc.) to inform your research. If you find another resource online, ask your teacher to verify whether it is a reliable source for information.

Physical Health Resources

  1. Science.Gov
  2. Mayo Clinic
  3. United Nations - Global Health

2. Guiding Questions for your project idea:

  1. Describe the health issue so that someone with no prior knowledge of the problem could understand it
  2. Who or what does this health issue affect?
  3. What is its impact?
  4. What are the current approaches to solving it?

Deliverable:

Create a post in the "responses tab" and include:

  • Answers for all 4 guiding questions
  • Add 3 "evocative images" to your slideshow that would help viewers understand the health topic (e.g. If you're working on an air quality-related illness, you might share a picture of air pollution). Evocative images are images that quickly communicate to viewers what domain you're working on.
